International News

  • A step forward for Africa

    President of Malawi

From a continent, whose reputation on gay rights has hardly been good, news has come today of a ray of hope. President Joyce Banda has announced that she wishes to overturn the ban on homosexuality in Malawi. This would be the first African country to do this since 1994.

This change in tack for the country has come for two reasons. Firstly there has recently been a change in President after the death of a heart attack of President Bingu wa Mutharika. His reputation on human rights was seriously tarnished when two men were sentenced to 14 years in prison for becoming engaged. He did pardon them after much international condemnation however commented this was only done on humanitarian grounds and that they had "committed a crime against our culture, against our religion, and against our laws".

The second reason is money. Many western nations have cut aid to African countries citing their reputation on subjects like gay rights as the reason.

In her first state of the nation address to parliament, Mrs Banda said: "Some laws which were duly passed by the august house... will be repealed as a matter of urgency... these include the provisions regarding indecent practices and unnatural acts."

To the rest of the world this seems a small step, for Africa this is a large leap for a continent where one nation, Uganda, has had a bill presented to make being gay punishable by death.

  • Christian B & B refuses Gay stay.

    bandb

Gay couple Steven Preddy and Martyn Hall have won a discrimination case against a Christian-run BB for not being allowed to share a double bed. A Bristol County Court judge has ruled that Peter and Hazelmary Bull unlawfully refused the men the room, awarding the gay couple £1,800 in damages each.

Steven Preddy had booked a room at the establishment in 2008, and Mrs Bull assumed it would his wife staying with him. When he and his partner arrived, they were refused a stay in a double room by the manager, Bernie Quinn, and offered separate single rooms instead – because allowing them to stay together would be an affront to their faith.

The B&B’s website also has a notice that tells potential guests that they prefer to only let double accommodation to heterosexual married couples. The gay rights organization had sent the Bulls a notice a month before Preddy made his booking, warning that the statement on their website was illegal. After being refused, the gay couple used the 2007 Equality Act Regulations to launch the case, claiming damages of £5,000.

Preddy and Hall say they are very happy with the ruling. When they booked the hotel, they just wanted to take a relaxing weekend break away like thousands of other couples, they continued. They are really pleased the judge has confirmed that the circumstances of their civil partnership hold the same status in law as a marriage between two heterosexual people, they added, and that no one is above the law, regardless of their religious beliefs

The 27-year-old former painter and decorator - who was crowned winner of the ITV1 show on Sunday (12.12.10) - admitted while his £1 million recording contract prize will change his life for the better, he also wants to have a career that justifies his win.

He explained: "Everyone who has voted for me has turned my life inside out and upside down in a good way, hopefully. I want to go on and have a career that justifies me winning the show.

"It was just some confirmation that everything I've been working so hard at for the last 12 years has been worth it. If you've got a dream, chase it down and don't let anyone tell you you can't do it. If you believe in yourself you always can."

Meanwhile, fellow contestant Mary Byrne - who finished in fifth place in the competition - revealed she always expected the Essex-based hunk to win the show.

She said: "Right from the beginning, I always knew Matt would win. He deserves it and he really is a lovely guy."
